Import SRT captions into Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve
Updated:
Professional editors have their own transcription tools, but they are not always available, included in your plan or accurate in your language. Importing an SRT from CueSprint gives you an editable caption track in minutes, without sending your footage anywhere.
Add captions nowPrepare the file in CueSprint
- Export a reference version of your edit (a quick MP4 is fine) and open it in CueSprint.
- Fix names and terms in the word list.
- Choose the line length with Words per group: 4–5 for horizontal video, 2–3 for vertical.
- Download the SRT. Both programs also read WebVTT, but SRT is the safest choice.
Because the timings come from your exported sequence, import the captions into the same sequence and keep it starting at the same point.
Adobe Premiere Pro
- Choose File → Import and select the
.srt. It appears in the Project panel as a captions item. - Drag it onto the timeline. Premiere creates a caption track above the video.
- Select the captions to edit their text, timing and style. Saving a caption style lets you reuse it in every project.
- When exporting, the Captions section of the export settings lets you create a sidecar file (SRT, for example) or burn captions into the video.
DaVinci Resolve
- Choose File → Import → Subtitle, or right-click in the Media Pool and import the subtitle file.
- Drag the subtitle item onto the timeline: Resolve adds a subtitle track.
- Select the track to change font, size, colour, outline and position in the Inspector.
- On the Deliver page, the subtitle settings let you export the captions as a separate file or burn them into the video.
Importing subtitle files works in the free version of DaVinci Resolve. Menu labels can differ slightly between versions.
Burned-in captions or a sidecar file?
For social media, burn them in: most viewers never switch captions on. For YouTube, Vimeo or a client delivery, deliver a sidecar file so captions can be toggled, translated and corrected later. Many editors do both from the same caption track.
Why use CueSprint for this
- Private: only the audio is sent for transcription and nothing is stored. Your footage never leaves your computer.
- Fast: a three-minute clip is usually transcribed in well under a minute.
- Many languages: the language is detected automatically, including right-to-left scripts and languages without spaces.
